Monday, December 3, 2007 Tampa Bay Rays Troy Pervical to Closer in place of Al Reyes Al Reyes to 1st in line in place of Dan Wheeler Dan Wheeler to 2nd in line in place of Gary Glover The Rays signed Percival to a 2 year deal to be the teams' closer. The 38-year-old came out of retirement to post a 0.85 WHIP in 40 IP with 36 K this past season for the Cardinals. Percival's last full season as a closer came back in 2004 when the veteran had 33 saves for the Angels. Reyes moves to a setup role after recording 26 saves in 30 opportunties in 2007. The 37-year-old had a 1.15 WHIP in 60+ IP with 70 K. Chicago Cubs Kerry Wood still Closer Carlos Marmol still 1st in line Bob Howry still 2nd in line The Cubs resigned Wood to a 1 year deal with a chance to emerge as the teams' closer this coming Spring Training. GM Jim Hendry said after the signing that Wood has a "great opportunity to pitch late in the game". The 30-year-old pitched less than 120 innings over the past 3 seasons due to injuries. Wood did pitch well for the Cubs in the 2nd half last year with 24 K in 24+ IP, as the hard throwing Texan could have a chance to resurrect his career in a relief role.
