Needs to stay at that new level or this pick could turn in to a mediocre 350 point catcher. #2 CHRIS JOSE JIMENEZ Closer COL good pick Jimenez went from a 1st year inconsistent SP with the Cardinals in '99...to a bubble bullpen guy in Spring '00 for the Rockies...to the Rockies closer. You never can tell where those closers are going to come. I'm not crazy about Jimenez's long term ability to stay a closer...but he is a closer for now. #3 ALEX, pick acquired from JOHN TOM GORDON Closer CHI good pick Gordon had reconstructive elbow surgery in '99. Reports are that he's throwing well. The test will be whether he gets back his dominating curveball. I like his chances to pick up about 35 saves this season. #4 JEFF JOSE MESA Set up man PHI OK pick Mesa is a set up man for the Phillies. If he pitches real well he could emerge as the closer. I just don't see him pitching that well. He's let up more hits than IP in each of the past 4 seasons. #5 MARK RICKY BOTTALICO Closer PHI good pick Phillies closer. Hasn't been the same since his surgery in '98. Could be Jose Mesa in a season or two. #6 RICH SCOTT STRICKLAND Set up man MON good pick Strickland closed in Urbina's abscence last season; after Steve Kline burned out. He's a quality reliever and now that he has closer on his resume his chances to close in the future are decent. #7 ALEX, acquired from Arra in the Larry Walker deal TODD WALKER 2B COL good pick Starting 2B for the Rockies...enough said. Walker should have good numbers with Coors as his home. He's Warren Morris away from Coors. #8 DAN SUPPLEMENTAL PICK KEVIN MILLAR Utility FLO bad pick Millar was competing with Derrek Lee for the Marlins 1B job last Spring. Lee won out and Millar looks to be a career bench guy. Dan cut Millar following the season. #9 MIKE P RYAN DEMPSTER SP FLO good pick Emerged as one of the best SP in the NL last season. He's young and has good stuff. Now a potential middle reliever for the Yankees. He had over 500 points last season, but I don't see long term value. Will probably end up being a utility player. #14 DAN JAY PAYTON OF NY good pick Solid rookie season; after everyone gave up on him. Payton was a top prospect who battled through several injuries. I think he could take a step up to star in the next couple of seasons. 2nd Round #15 BILL J.R. HOUSE C PIT good pick Top prospect. Will probably end up at 1B. Don't believe the hype, he's not going back to football. #16 MIKE A BRAD CRESSE C ARI good pick Big time power potential...strikes out a ton. Could take a few years to develop. Will probably end up at 1B. #17 CHRIS BENNY AGBAYANI OF NY OK pick Solid player; I'm just not convinced he will remain an every day player. #18 JOHN KEITH GINTER 2B HOU good pick Break out season last year. Won't supplant Biggio at 2B, so he needs a position change or trade. I'm skeptical because of his non-prospect status prior to '00. #19 MIKE P, acquired from Jeff in the Warren Morris deal VICENTE PADILLA set up man PHI good pick If he develops and starts to put up solid numbers he will end up being the Phillies closer. Stats aren't as good as the hype. Has more value as a reliever...potential closer. Stairs could start at 1b for the Cubs or start in LF if Corey Patterson goes to the minors...or he could produce like he did in '00 and become a bench player. #30 JOHN, acquired from Alex JOE THURSTON SS LA good pick Good prospect. With a solid '01 could become a top prospect. 3rd Round #31 BILL LANCE NIEKRO 3B SF good pick Good prospect. I was surprised he lasted this long. With a solid '01 he will be a top prospect and the Giants 3b of the very near future. #32 MIKE A SUPPLEMENTAL PICK HONG CHI KUO SP LA OK pick This was a good pick until Kuo blew out his elbow. Kuo has great stuff, but now must overcome reconstructive elbow surgery. #33 CHRIS JASON STOKES OF FLO good pick Getting a lot of hype as a hitter. Didn't debut last year due to signing late. I like him. #34 JOHN ALEX CINTRON SS ARI OK pick Decent prospect. Will be a top pick in this year's major league draft. Tender elbow is a concern. #45 CHRIS REGGIE TAYLOR OF PHI OK pick. Decent prospect.
